The rectangular moulded surround with a zinc liner with a pierced ormolu gallery, above a panelled frieze with a fluted edge, with later handles to the side, raised on turned tapering legs ending in ormolu caps and castors. Joseph Gengenbach, known as Canabas, maître in 1766. This elegant jardinière is conceived in the sober, unadorned taste of the late 18th Century known as the goût anglais, using simple functional forms with few gilt mounts and often based directly on English prototypes. Joseph Gengenbach, known as Canabas, was a significant contributor to this style and his name is synonymous with restrained designs finely executed in both solid and veneered mahogany.
