Capricci, typically defined as an architectural fantasy, were popular among Grand Tourists, conjuring romantic images of Italy, especially the picturesque decay of classical ruins, and were prized as a mark of the artist’s imaginative expression. The French artist of the second half of the 18th Century who best showed this trend is Hubert Robert. The small figures help in demonstrating scale.
