About

Each lyre-shaped backplate topped with ribbon-tied cresting and garlands ending with the mask of a satyr. See Vergoldete Bronzen (1986), Vol. I, p.242, Ill. 4.5.10 for a similar model which they date back to 1780 and which was in the Wrightsman Collection. Watson, in Volume III of the Wrightsman Collection (1970) p. 78 describes the sconces similar to ours as having been supplied in 1787 or 1788 for use in the Cabinet de Toilette of Queen Marie Antoinette at the Chteau de Saint-Cloud. The ones in the Wrightsman Collection end in a trophy of musical instruments below the head of the satyr which our model does not have but may have had at some point. The model is already stylistically close to the Empire style.
